TOURISM IN THAILAND, A HORROR FOR ELEPHANTS

If you or anyone you know is thinking about riding an elephant, attending a circus, a painting show, or visiting an elephant camp, PLEASE take a look at these photos and read the accompanying information.

You may think it'd be a fun experience, but it's NOT fun for these poor, overworked, young elephants.

Elephants in the ‪‎tourist industry‬ suffer unimaginable pain at the hands of their owners --- all for the sake of so-called entertainment.

As you'll see, they're pretty much all juveniles, and they were stolen from their mothers and herds in the wild in order to break their spirit and live a life of misery for money.

This picture speaks for itself

Look at this BABY! What has she been through!? Starvation, deprivation and torture.

All the whitish lines you can see are scars from the hook. The purple is iodine applied to heal the wounds

Standing motionless, afraid to move. Look at her eyes

She's just a baby, once wild and free, and now chained, being poked, and profoundly sad

Painting an abstract picture at a camp stating they support conservation doesn't mean the elephant is treated any differently if the painting isn't a flower or a tree. This mahout had a nail in his hand. There were puncture wounds and blood on this elephant too.

Why do we need to see elephants paint? Why why why? It is just MORE fun to watch them bathe in the river, play in the mud, walk in the forest, and learn about an elephants natural behaviour, instead of exploiting them.

ASIAN ELEPHANT-HAIR RINGS --- MORE TORTURE FOR ELEPHANTS!

via SAVE ELEPHANT FOUNDATION

Although considered hairless animals, elephants are born with thick hair. The hair on an elephant calf sheds as the calf grows. The hair is designed to allow elephants to sense the closeness of objects the hair touches rather than to provide warmth.
The tail of an elephant is the area with the thickest hair. Elephants use their tail as a fly swat against insect bites as well as to comfort themselves, pick up water to spread across their bodies to cool off when they swim and to touch each other and show their emotions to their friends and family. Hair is also visible on the head and back of an elephant. Eyelashes provide protection for elephant against unwanted bacteria particles that may cause infection.
Across Asia, people believe that to wear the ring made of elephant hair will bring good luck. The elephant ring has become famous to sell in Thailand’s markets and some elephant camps. Many elephants no longer have hair on their tail. In Thailand, one elephant hair ring costs around 400 Baht. If the ring is made from the eyelashes, the price rises as it is softer and can also be made into a bracelet. Many elephants have lost their tails to the greed of humans and the superstitions that drive them. When an elephant has no hair on their tail, it affects their ability to care for themselves in a natural way. The loss of eye lashes causes infections that may lead to blindness.
Please educate your friends and family to the truth behind the elephant ring. Their lives mean more than a souvenir, don’t support this torture trade.

"Gambling On Extinction 2015 Trailer"

https://vimeo.com/119005510

'Extinction is no longer a by-product of poaching it is the very purpose. There is a war against elephants and rhinos raging in the savannahs and jungles of Africa and Asia, where illegal trade in endangered animals is booming. It’s being waged by speculative investors, warlords funding their political conflicts and unbridled, thoughtless consumerism. The story is about greed, brutality and the merciless battle over a limited resource. The numbers are shocking. 30,000 elephants - one every 15 minutes - and over 1000 rhinos will die this year alone. As numbers go down the prices go up, making it a perverse futures market in extinction. At 20 Billion annually it’s the most lucrative business after drugs and weapons. At this pace elephants, rhinos and tigers living in the wild will be extinct in our lifetimes. The film takes the audience from the killing fields to the trading hubs, exposes the lethal mechanisms of the global trade, who the customers are, what generates demand, and what can be done to stop the slaughter.'

VIDEO: BABY ELEPHANT ESCORTS MAN TO A HERD OF BULL ELEPHANTS

Transcript by Care2 and Video by National Geographic

Investigative journalist Bryan Christy is working hard to expose the ivory trade and raise awareness about the plight of Africa’s elephants who are being slaughtered at a staggering rate for their ivory. It’s almost incomprehensible that these iconic animals could disappear from the landscape forever within our lifetime if drastic action isn’t taken to stop poachers.

Occasionally we get reminders about the urgency of this issue when we hear stories about the intelligence and socially complex nature of elephants, and get glimpses into their lives in the wild. This week National Geographic shared a short clip from its documentary series Explorer: Warlords of Ivory showing Christy on a trip to Kenya where he visited orphans at the Ithumba Release Camp in Kenya’s Tsavo East National Park. This is where orphans who are cared for by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust begin their reintegration into the wild.

There, these orphans escort him to meet a herd of wild elephants who he admits can be extremely dangerous, adding that there’s a good chance he’d be seriously injured if he approached them on his own. With the baby elephants as his chaperones, however, he says he feels safe, adding, “They are protecting me, whether they know it or not.”

Christy said the experience “reestablishes my belief that these animals live in a society we barely understand. And I don’t have any greater right or lesser right to be on this planet, to have my community than these elephants do.” Unfortunately, not everyone sees elephants, or our place in the world, this way and poachers continue to threaten the future survival of these amazing animals. We continue to hear stories about the deaths of well-known and beloved individuals, entire families and, possibly most heartbreaking, more stories about orphans whose world’s are tragically changed forever by human greed.

Christy, meanwhile, is trying to crack the ivory trade. Recently he embarked on an effort to expose the criminals involved by tracking the exact route ivory is taking through Africa to its end destination by getting fake tusks embedded with a tracker into the market. His work will be featured as the cover story in the September issue of National Geographic. For more info about Christy’s work, check out Explorer: Warlords of Ivory. To learn more about how to help orphaned elephants and stop the ivory trade check out the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and iworry.org.

EXPOSED - USDA's SECRET WAR ON WILDLIFE (VIDEO)

In this award-winning film three former federal agents and a Congressman blow the whistle on Wildlife Services--a barbaric, wasteful and misnamed agency within the USDA--and expose the government's secret war on wildlife on the taxpayer's dime. Wildlife Services has been having their way for almost a century, killing over 100,000 native predators and millions of birds each year, as well as maiming, poisoning, and brutalizing countless pets. They have also seriously harmed more than a few humans. They apparently thought they were going to continue getting away with it. But with your help, we're not going to let them. Learn more and support our efforts to end America's war on wildlife at http://www.predatordefense.org/exposed

Louise du Toit - GENTLE GIANTS, (VIDEO)

'Each species is a masterpiece, a creation assembled with extreme care and genius.'

"These words of Edward O. Wilson perfectly capture the fragile existence of the largest living land animals on Earth today. Elephants continue to roam our planet, but these magnificent beings remain under severe threat from humans, the latter which continue to kill and capture them for financial gain.

On the brink of near extinction, their only hope for survival today is through conservation in different ways. May we all realize the extent of their suffering and endangerment, uniting to work towards their freedom and well-being.

THANDI'S CALF: THE RHINO THAT SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN BORN (VIDEO)

"These rangers found 3 rhinos, hacked and left for dead by poachers. These men had seen other poaching attacks before but this one was specially brutal, so they had almost no hope for the animals. Unfortunately, two of the male rhinos died, but the female one survived, even though she had very little chance to do so. Her name is Thandi and she’s a very special rhino that after three years of the attack gave birth to a healthy little guy at Kariega Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. This is the story of the rhino that should never have been born."

PTSD IN ELEPHANTS, US, AND OTHER KIN (Short Doc.)

PTSD and Elephants - Gay Bradshaw PhD (20min. vid presentation) Gay A. Bradshaw is an American psychologist and ecologist. She is director of The Kerulos Center. Her work focuses on animal trauma recovery and wildlife self-determination. Bradshaw’s studies were the first to identify Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in non-human animals beginning with free living elephants. She is the author of a seminal series of articles on great ape psychology, trauma, civil rights, and consciousness. This work was expanded to parrots, bears, and domestic animals and led to her founding the field of trans-species psychology, the articulation of a vertebrate common model of brain, mind, and behavior that is supported by existing science.

ELEPHANT ORPHANAGE---60 MINUTES 2009

"Whenever we hear stories about orphanages there is a good chance it is going to pull at your heart strings. The video below is no exception, even though the elephants in this video have gone on to live happy lives.

The orphans all come from East Africa and were abandoned when they were less than 2 years of age. With the price of ivory increasing, more and more elephants are being killed and their orphaned babies are being left alone and in need of care.

The orphanage is in Kenya and has been around for over 30 years. The elephant sanctuary is huge and it has to be, in order to accommodate these majestic animals. Each elephant has their own private room/dormitory. There is also a group bathing area, dining area, and a fun playground.

There are usually 14 orphans at the sanctuary at one time, and they usually spend a few years there until they are reintroduced to the bush. CEO and head nurse Daphne Sheldrick founded the orphanage and has been working with these animals for over 50 years. What Daphne and the crew do for these elephants is truly incredible." via SunDazing.com

ANIMAL ABUSE: "NEVER BE SILENT"

ALTHOUGH I DESPISE INGRID NEWKIRK AND PETA, THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT SHORT VIDEO TO WATCH. DON'T EVER BE SILENT WHEN IT COMES TO ANIMAL ABUSE.
(GRAPHIC IMAGES)

"EXPOSING HOW ELEPHANTS HAVE THEIR SPIRITS SYSTEMEICALLY CRUSHED IN CAPTIVITY"

WARNING: NOT FOR SENSITIVE VIEWERS/READERS:
This is a MUST WATCH and MUST READ - if you do not know by now that Elephants in Circuses or used for Entertainment or Elephants rides constitutes total abuse and torture for these animals, the video will certainly enlighten you.
How to Break an Elephant’s Spirit

One Green Planet explains Phajaan, as it’s known in Asia (or “crushing” in the United States), and how it makes elephant rides in the Asian tourism industry possible.

Phajaan begins when elephants are the most vulnerable. Baby elephants are forced into crates similar to gestation crates that we abhor seeing pigs in. While the baby elephant is being starved, he is also:

Tied from his feet with rope that will graduate to chains
Forced to have his limbs stretched
Beaten with sharp objects
Verbally abused and constantly yelled at
Mutilated through bull hooks that are used to “stab the head, slash the skin and tug the ears.”
Phajaan is relentless for many weeks until the elephant finally breaks. Heart of Ganesh explains that baby elephants are also denied medical attention during the crushing, and many will die during the process.

In case you’re wondering, circuses employ almost identical crushing methods. Paws for the News reports how elephant crushing is rampant in more captivity situations: elephants “begging in the streets, the ones in trekking camps, breeding camps, tourist camps, and zoos. At least more than half of them have gone through the Phajaan.”

Mahout Manipulation

Phajaan has a secret weapon to seal the deal, and he’s known as a mahout. The use of an elephant handler, or mahout, is arguably the most effective part of Phajaan.

The mahout sweeps in to “save” the elephant; they are not active participants in the Phajaan torture. They are the first person to bring the tortured and starved animal food and water. Mahouts also release elephants from the original gestation-like crates. A mahout will work and bond with only one elephant for his entire career. When a mahout retires, his relative will take over his mahout duties. Elephants are emotionally and mentally intelligent animals that thrive on social bonds, and mahouts are the only bonds that come close in the captive Asian tourism industry.

The Consequences of Exploiting Elephants

But wild spirits can never truly be broken. We keep seeing captive elephants in circuses and in the tourism industry retaliate:

In 1992, People reports how a usually calm circus elephant named Kelly became “frighteningly enraged” while she was giving five children and a mother a ride.
The Seattle Times reports how in 1994, a zoo elephant named Kenya “picked him [a zoo patron] up and smashed him to the ground, then tried to gore him with her tusks.”
In late 2014, The Independent reports how an elephant in Thailand ran off with a mother and her 9-year-old daughter from Russia on his back after he trampled his handler to death.
There’s also a major health concern that should limit our interactions with captive elephants, and it’s the spread of tuberculosis. In 2013, Maine took the extreme measure of banning elephants from entering the state because of the health threat.

Help End Elephant Exploitation

Despite the obvious evidence that elephants and captivity do not mix, many are determined to ride it out as long as possible. For example, an action plan is being drawn out to curb elephant attacks during festivals in an Indian state, says Manorama Online.

We don’t need an action plan to stop captive elephant attacks; we need an action plan to end elephant captivity. Money talks, and industries that exploit elephants listen, so don’t fund elephant exploitation. Heart of Ganesh offers more ideas on how you can help end elephant exploitation.

SHORT FILM: DANGEROUS RESCUE OF PANG DOW, THE ELEPHANT

If You Don't Have Facebook, the Video Will Probably Not Appear. Sorry. (May take about 10 seconds for video to appear)

9 LITTLE ELEPHANTS

Nine Little Elephants is a "true life" documentary. The emotions that were captured over the one year of filming make this a compelling and at times heart-wrenching story. The producers had access to all the drama that went into the rehabilitation of the elephants. The hope and despair of the elephants were documented every step of the way through out their arduous rehabilitation journey, the climax of the documentary has had a test screening audience in tears.

ODE TO THE AMUR LEOPARD (VIDEO)

The Amur leopard is an extremely rare subspecies, with only about 20 adults and six cubs still in the wild. Although it once prowled through eastern China and Korea, it's now limited to the Primorye region of Russia. There it faces an array of threats, including poaching for its fur, habitat loss, road traffic and climate change. Its tiny population is still in decline, according to the IUCN, and it has the lowest genetic diversity of any leopard subspecies. The related Amur tiger rebounded from fewer than 40 individuals a generation ago, however, giving conservationists hope the Amur leopard can pull off a similar feat.
